This is a hand carved enameled sterling silver japanese kanji martial arts pendant. It contains the japanese kanji for the word “Samurai” written in the Kaisho style of caligraphy. Originally meaning “those who serve in close attendance to the nobility”. The kanji is raised and surrounded by black enamel. This is black “hard’ enamel which has been fired in an oven at between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius for several hours. The result is a smooth and durable finish on this impressive medallion. The Samurai were the military nobility of Japan. This warrior class or bushi of Japan were the highly skilled military men and women of feudal Japan. Trained in both weaponed and weaponedless arts like jujutsu the samurai were fierce warriors. Known for their bravery, loyalty, and these skills with a variety of weapons, including both the bow and the traditional japanese fighting sword, the katana, the Samurai helped shape the history of Japan.
