This is a large hand carved sterling silver japanese kanji martial arts pendant. It contains the japanese kanji for the word “Samurai” written in the Kaisho style of calligraphy. Originally meaning “those who serve in close attendance to the nobility”. The pendant is held by a moveable bail at the top of the medallion. The Samurai were the military nobility of Japan. This warrior class or bushi of Japan were the highly skilled military men and women of feudal Japan. Trained in both weapon and weaponless arts like jujutsu the samurai were fierce warriors. Known for their bravery, loyalty, and their skills with a variety of weapons, including both the bow and the traditional japanese fighting sword, the katana, the Samurai helped shape the history of Japan.
