Product Description
This is a hand carved enameled 14kt White Gold japanese kanji martial arts pendant. It contains the japanese kanji for the word “Judo” written in the Kaisho style of caligraphy. The Kanji can be literally translated to mean “gentle way”. The kanji is raised and surrounded by black enamel. The result is a smooth and durable finish on this impressive medallion. The art of Judo was created in Japan in 1882 by Professor Jiguro Kano. While having its roots and origin in the ancient Japanese art of jujutsu, a system of hand-to-hand combat, Prof. Kano. successfully adapted and modified several of these older jujutsu styles into what has become the modern sport of Judo. As a competitive sport the object of Judo is to” either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking the elbow or by applying a choke.” Prof. Kano’s teaching’s of Judo are based on two guiding principles, maximum efficiency with minimum effort and mutual welfare and benefit. The first principle teaches that with the proper physical training and understanding of both movement and physical balance neither size nor strength determine the outcome of a judo contest. In teaching his second principle Prof. Kano believed that the object of Judo was to build personal character, respect and to develop “one's mind and body for the mutual benefit and welfare of all mankind.”
